Leyland Barracudas A.S.C. came into being through the following:
Press Notice 1974
"An exploratory meeting has been held with a view to forming a South Ribble Swimming Club..... A further meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 15 at the Leyland Pool and all interested persons are invited to attend, in particular any person with previous club experience who is willing to assist in the running of a club or who has experience in swimming instruction is invited to contact the Baths Manager at Leyland Pool in advance of the meeting."
Charles E. Lee Chief Executive
After the press notice, a Mr Osgerby (whose daughters Ann and Janet eventually became members of the British Olympic Team) put an advert in the local paper asking for anyone who was interested to meet at the new Leyland Pool.
A meeting subsequently held at Leyland Pool and the following persons turned up.
What followed was Elaine and Felicity took charge of the training. The others about organising, recruiting and helping as required.
Among those elected to the first Club Committee were local businessman Trevor Hemmings as President, Harry Forrest as Vice Chairman, Isobel Mills as Membership Secretary, Elaine Fitchie as Competition Secretary and Bryan Hunter as Committee Member. Trevor Hemmings kindly gave initial financial support the Club.
It is delightful to note that some of these people are still very much involved with the Club. Harry Forrest is now Club President, Elaine Fitchie a senior official with the North Lancs, but still regularly officiates at Club Galas and matches, and not least a past Club Chairman Bryan Hunter.
